His portfolio of cosmic art interprets an inspirational, gigantic, magnificent universe, seemingly floating benignly in space belying the tumultuous alchemy of matter. Hartley then takes his original paintings and creates variations by applying secondary techniques and treatments in a variety of other media.

Jeffry Jensen - November 2011 featured artist

                                              A Child's Moon - photograph 24 x 18"

Biography:

Since 1991, I’ve been a member of the Pasadena Society of Artists. Teaches math and science really well, becomes tri-state area private tutor of choice. In the middle of all that re-discovers yearning to make art and discovers the Art Students League. Studies there for several years with Peter Cox, Bruce Dorfman, Richard Pousette-Dart, William Scharf and Fredrick Wong. Bit of a teacher’s pet sometimes, sometimes not. Earns some awards. Family ties pull her back west and she is back in Pasadena. Hopes you like the art.

Artist’s Statement:
Painting equals a safe place for me in a world where I have never felt safe, even in my own skin. Read anything, see any movie, play or TV show, listen to any lyric – almost every time there is the seeking of safety or security. A few people seek danger, heroes seem fearless and take risks, but most of us need a safe place.

Making a safe place for myself has always required the matching of mismatched edges: mine with those of the world. I find myself bonding together broken fragments, trying to make some sort of new stronger whole structure out of things that were never meant to fit each other.

I think this is why I feel compelled to make the work as I do.

David Grigsby - Featured Artist August 2011

<img border="0" height="254" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FdlvO-OfE20/Tjr4BhJoxJI/AAAAAAAAAD8/RMeYeybPCMk/s320/Grigsby+Church+Street%252C+Lower+Manhattan.JPG" t$="true" width="320" />

Church Street, Lower Manhattan 2009
Acrylic on Canvas

David Grigsby explores the urban landscape in his paintings, many of which focus on the unique iconography of Southern California, where the artist has lived most of his life. He finds inspiration in the familiar, nondescript elements of the city and suburbs - the sidewalks and strip malls, traffic signs and billboards. When asked to describe his style of painting, Grigsby says he would call himself simply a 'realist', as opposed to a 'photorealist'. "Although my paintings are based on photographic references, I often alter the original source material considerably in order to arrive at a compositional arrangement that suits me. Maybe you could also call me a 'minimalist', because I'm always looking for ways to eliminate elements that are not essential to the overall composition."

A member of the Pasadena Society of Artists, Grigsby is a regular contributor to their group exhibitions and juried events, as well as other individual and group shows in the L.A. area. George is a figurative and plein air painter who works in oils and various other media. This series of paintings was inspired by walking in the foothills, road trips, or a momentary reflective facial expression.

Designing each painting came down to how to encapsulate the moment visually with texture, tone and light. The way light shined on each subject, or didn't, created the most dynamic composition.

"Although I love painting a variety of subjects, I find I often return to painting trees or people. Davies and Benson are former colleagues at the Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory where they pursued efforts to explore the planets in our solar system.
The images in the paintings are extensions of landscapes and skyscapes, all related to the various creations of Mother Nature. The oil painting techniques are several but the most easily recognizable is the use of pointillism. The paintings are contemporary in feel because of their abstract construction, but they are nonetheless about something natural.
Once one of these paintings was begun, it took on a life of its own, leaving the painter Davies somewhat at a loss to explain to others his mental processes during the painting. Davies hopes a viewer will be instantly intrigued by the images and will wish to take a second look and a third and other longer looks.
The materials used in the frames made by Benson are cherry and dark walnut wood that Benson took out of forestland his family owns in Michigan.
Davies has exhibited elsewhere. Locally he has shown his work at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and the Gallery at the End of the World on North Lake in Altadena.

Nancy Desmond Armitage March 2011 Featured Artist

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The late Dr. Alex Vilumsons, the prize winning abstract-impressionist, and Tom Fong, the California master teacher and artist were influential in his development as an artist. He currently studies with ntoed watercolorist Fealing Lin and abtract artist and teacher Terri Balady.

"For me, life is a wonderful abstraction of elusive beauty, mystery and spiritual transformation I feel compelled to explore as an artist and try and make sense of in, well, the abstract," he explains. He is a member of the National Watercolor Society and the Pasadena Society of Artists.

Visit his website at PeterMcDonaldStudio.com

In the conference room we have the intriguing scanography works of Debbi Swanson Patrick.

Of her work, Debbi states:

"Since the day my father brought home a Polaroid camera I've been in love with making images, the joy of discovery in capturing a moment that will never be again. Now, I've embraced the art of scanography with it's incredible quality of light and detail to tell stories, capture mood, create a visual-sometime ethereal and whimsical-festival of life and death. I'm intrigued with contrasts: life/death, old/new, dark/light, real/imitation, daily reality/eternal spirit to connect into our individual emotional waves, and how we manage to live, to cope, and laugh in spite of it all. Ultimately my goal is to transform past challenges into the beauty of original "Still lives" that reflect joy and lifes' emotional layers by contrasting polished, raw, manufactured, natural and found objects in startling ways.

One of the best moves I ever made was the one to Altadena 15 years ago. Thank you to all my Altadena/Pasadena friends and family who've been such great supporters and helped me through this past year! Special thanks to Dawn Stevens of Clickers and Flickers and Ed Martin, my scanography mentor and inspiration. This show is dedicated to my late husband, Steven, for his never-ending faith.

Please visit Debbi's other work at:

photodeb.viewbook.com
AltadenaAboveItAll.com
AltadenaDailyPhoto.com
KPPC's The Freeway on Facebook
digiphotomag.com

Please join Debbie for an

Artist's Reception on

December 16th

from 6 pm to 9 pm

at

The Coffee Gallery.

September Artists - Janos K. He never touched the sketching pencil again, but neither did he stop looking at the world with an artist's eye. Now, sixty hears later, he has begun to create photographic images, which reflect all he learned from his visual experiences.

Just as every block of marble contains a great sculpture and one need only to trim away the excess, the world is full of great images and the task of the photographer is only to keep an open eye. He keeps trying to catch those magical moments when form and content come together. When they do, then there are no questions, no doubts, and no ambiguity: the image is just right.

There is nothing subtle in his photography. Color or black and white, it is intended to grab your attention, and to demand a "wow". Being a scientist in his other life, he strives for technical perfection, but that is only the first stage. the second is when the image connects with the viewer. He connects best with people, so his subject always includes people or a hint that people are nearby. the third stage of the "wow" is the soul-crashing impact that is rarely achieved, but once seen never forgotten. A photograph like that can be a life's ambition. You have to aim high.

Visit his website at http;//www.janosklanyi.com

In the conference room we have the beautiful watercolor paintings of artist Dorothy Shepherd.

She particularly likes to pain animals, landscapes and flowers. For the last two years, she has been studying with master Chinese calligrapher Tom Shantian Chow and is learning to paint some of the Chinese calligraphy characters in cursive style. Many of the brush strokes used in her watercolors are also used in Chinese calligraphy. By practicing both forms of brushwork she hopes to improve her painting.

Janos K Lanyi's artwork will be on exhibit through September 29th.

Dorothy Shepherd's artwork will be on exhibit through September 22nd.

text-align: center;">

Jennifer discovered the art of felt making in a textile class at San Francisco State University where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art History.

Shifting her emphasis from painting to textiles, opened up a more organic approach to her art. The wool takes on a life of its own, as it shrinks and binds together, taking over the design, as the fibers are rolled and beaten into a piece of felt. It's like taking a painting, that she worked on for days and then rolling it up, while it is still wet, and beating it with a broom.

Felt making is both a physically and artistically challenging medium. Paul Getty Center employees Elliot Kai-Kee and Ellen South discussed the fact that so many staff memebers at the hilltop campus are practicing artists. It made sense, they thought, to share their passion for art-making by starting an after-work drawing group. Since then, they've met with other staffers once a week for three hours at a time, to sketch from a nude model - a centuries-old tradition that many contemporary artists continue to practice.

For those involved, it's a nice change of pace from the large institution's exciting yet often hectic work atmosphere. "It's theraputic at the end of the day to simply walk downstairs to the studio and shift from our professional capacities to making art," says South, who works by day as staff assistant to the Museum's Department of Sculpture and Decorative Arts. Artists sit around a central stand, on which a model holds a single pose for two to twenty minutes at a time. Music and conversation enliven the atmosphere.

The life drawing group is open to all Getty staff, including docents, volunteers and interns. Although the institution generously provides studio space, the group is entirely self supported and administered. "There are times when we've been able to employ two models simultaneously," says Melissa Piper, a staff assistant at the Getty Research Institute. "And other times we worry about whether we will have enough to pay one! But over the years we've had a core group of about eight of us."

Piper, South and Kai-Kee - who oversees gallery teaching in the Museum's Education Department - certainly count as that core group, as does Ron Schmidtling, a scientist for the Getty Conservation Institute and Anne Martens, a Museum media writer. Other artists include volunteers Nancy Pau and Lee Tirce, graduate intern Aude Degrassat, and Museum associate Dexter Cannon. Once a year, the group also generously donates to the Getty Community Service Teams' Annual Silent Auction to help raise funds for Los Angeles community charities.

Ron Schmidtling curated this exhibit, with the generous support of The Coffee Gallery. The works on view were all made within the last year. The drawing group is neither sponsored nor supported by the J. Paul Getty Trust.

November Artist - Sinclair Stratton

The Coffee Gallery is pleased to present

San Diego artist

Sinclair Stratton.

Her artwork will be on exhibit at The Coffee Gallery

from November 1, 2009 through November 30, 2009

in the main room.

There will be an artist reception on

Saturday, November 14

from

4:00 pm until 7:00 pm

Please come by, meet the artist and enjoy her wonderful artwork!

ARTIST PROFILE

When Sinclair Stratton channels her deep love for animals onto the paper, what emerge are vibrantly colorful images that capture the essence of her subjects and the admiration of her human audience, as well.

Sinclair's captivating portraits of wild and domestic life, created with watercolor in a deep-saturation technique that brings an unusual intensity to the medium, brought unexpected fame to a self-taught artist when Forbes Magazine named her "Best Emerging Artist" in a 2002 article on the world's leading pet portrait artists.

No longer a secret, Sinclair has been commissioned to immortalize the beloved pets of patrons from well beyond the borders of her native San Diego. Her paintings grace walls from Los Angeles to Miami's South Beach, and recent commissions have brought her work to London and Belgium.

Sinclair's creativity and passion for her artistry are rooted in her fondness for the creatures that share our world, and this devotion extends beyond the brush. Sinclair has actively supported non-profit organizations in San Diego County. Her donated paintings are integral to the interior decor of the new San Diego Humane Society & SPCA facility, and she dedicates a percentage of the proceeds from her new line of yoga mats to animal related nonprofit organizations.

For more information and to browse her online gallery, visit
www.sinclairstratton.com

October Exhibit

October Art Exhibit

Featuring the artwork of

Jessica Ostrander

"A LA MODE"

A series of paintings that explores the diverse beauty of fashion, style and the feminine mystique.

Show runs from October 2nd through October 31st.

ARTIST PROFILE

Jessica Ostrander creates in a wide range of styles.
